Research summary
Weight gain among individuals detained within forensic mental health services is a well-documented phenomenon, frequently attributed to antipsychotic medication, restrictive environments, and psychological vulnerabilities. While the physical health consequences of weight gain are well-established, there remains a significant gap in research exploring the psychological and social implications of this issue. This study aims to address this gap by qualitatively exploring the lived experiences of male patients who have experienced weight gain while detained in a forensic mental health service. Using Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), the research will examine the implications of patient weight gain within forensic mental health services. Semi-structured interviews will be conducted with 8–10 participants; all of whom will be adults who are currently (or have previously been) detained within forensic mental health services under The Mental Health Act (1983). By amplifying service user voices, the study seeks to provide valuable insights into the subjective experiences of a marginalised population, offering potential implications for clinical practice, policy development, and weight management support within forensic mental health services.
