Research summary
This will be a qualitative study to determine what factors affect the patient experience of having a liver MRI, what information patients would like to have, and how they would like this communicated to them. The study design will be a questionnaire-based study. Members of the public with experience of liver conditions will be recruited to have an MRI scan, and then be asked in an interview with a focussed questionnaire what they felt about the scans, and how they feel about the MRI report. Some participants will also have an ultrasound scan for comparison. The questionnaire has been designed by two national liver charities in partnership with liver specialists, liver researchers, and the designers of the Liver MRI (LiverMultiScan) and was further refined during a focus group involving liver patients. Themes and trends arising from the focused interview and questionnaire will then be analysed to optimise feedback of results from LiverMultiScan and improve overall patient experience. To conclude the study, some participants, reflecting a variety of views arising from analysis will be invited back to have a repeat scan to see whether changes to the clinical pathway arising from the thematic analysis have made overall experience better or worse.
