Research summary
The aim of this research study will be to explore the lived experience of being a hospital inpatient (in one acute hospital setting), through narrative style interview with patients recently discharged from hospital, and case note review. This will provide important information about individual patient perceptions of the quality of care services and care delivery throughout their hospital stay. Patients who have received support from the Hospital Specialist Palliative Care Team (HSPCT) as part of their care in hospital will be the focus for this study.
The findings from this study will used be to make recommendations to the acute trust regarding improving the patient experience of being in hospital and more specifically regarding the refinement and further development of a sensitive and responsive, HSPCT service.
The specific objectives of this research study are to:
Undertake narrative style interviews with recent hospital in patients specifically to explore:
1. Individual perceptions of the quality of care provided, including that provided by the HSPCT
2. Individual perceptions of communications between the patient and healthcare professionals they came into contact with, including members of the HSPCT.
3. Individual patient knowledge and understanding of the services and care they received whilst and in patient, including services provided by the HSPCTConduct a Case Note Analysis, specifically to:
