  • Research summary

Values-based practice is a way of working in clinical practice which takes into account the values and beliefs of the service users when working with them to help improve their health. At present little is known of what patients value in radiographic imaging for diagnostic purposes or in radiotherapy treatments. This project hopes to develop some understanding of service user values by directly asking groups of service users. The project will also explore what radiographers perceive patients value and what radiographic service managers value in order to identify any similarities or mismatches in expectations.\nThis work builds on two successful study days devised by the Association of Radiography Educators (ARE) in collaboration with The Collaborating Centre for Values-based Practice of St Catherine’s College, Oxford. We would like to conduct a small pilot study to explore service user, radiographer and service manager perspectives of values based practice in relation to radiography examinations and radiotherapy treatments using focus groups at two different sites. This will require three 1 hour focus groups managed by The University of Salford and five 1 hour focus groups managed by The University of Suffolk. The groups will not be mixed but will be groups of service users, groups of Radiographers and groups of managers.\nHaving provided a brief introduction and explanation of Values Based Practice we will ask:\n•\tservice users what they value in an x-ray examination/radiotherapy treatment, radiographers what they value\nand what they think the service user values and what they think the managers value. We will also ask radiology managers what they value in an x-ray examination/radiotherapy treatment.\n This work will raise professional awareness of Values Based Practice, identify service user values and potentially develop an evidence base to illustrate the need for values education in radiography.\nWe would hope to build on this initial study for future work. \n\n\n\n
