Research summary
Around 55,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year, with approximately 14850 undergoing a mastectomy (removal of all breast tissue). While mastectomy plus reconstruction is routinely offered and discussed with patients, around 70% of women choose simple mastectomy (either opting to use a prosthesis or 'go flat'). Aesthetic primary closure and contour is the desired outcome of mastectomy without reconstruction, however, satisfaction and expectations can vary. This study will explore patient perspectives of aesthetic outcome and satisfaction towards their post-mastectomy scar through qualitative interviews and a patient questionnaire (bespoke and BREAST-Q).
