Research summary
As a bone infection unit at a tertiary centre we have patients referred from all over the country with infected hip joints that require further complex revision surgery to eradicate their infection.Little research to date has explored patients’ (and their families’) experiences of waiting for this surgery. Patients often require multiple surgical revisions in an effort to eradicate infection, treatment is complex and extends over many years. These patients are both waiting and unwell. They have usually already undergone previous surgical interventions and are frequently in pain; have discharging wounds, systemic symptoms of infection and associated psychological symptoms (anxiety and depression). Other studies have found that waiting for revisions often meant long periods of immobility and related psychological distress for patients. The aim of the study is to understand prosthetic joint infections (PJI) patients’ and their families’ experiences of waiting for revision surgery for hip infection and their perceptions of its impact.
Their experiences of being on a waiting list for hip revision surgery ,perceptions of the impact of waiting on their life and wellbeing and their suggestions about how their waiting experience might be improvedREC name
