Research summary
Gastrointestinal endoscopy is the investigation of people’s guts using flexible cameras. Over two million procedures are performed in the UK each year and we need to ensure that quality and safety are maintained.
However, issues with safety still occur in endoscopy. In order to learn from these, we need to be able to detect problems, but our current means of doing so could be improved. This is where the patient voice comes in. Previous research has shown that patients themselves are able to pick up incidents that are otherwise missed by current methods. Patients also see things from a different perspective. We want to apply these concepts in endoscopy.
This project involves patients from the start to help us to develop a patient tool that can be used to report safety incidents. We will conduct 3 separate focus groups with patients who are part of 'patient and public involvement' groups. These focus groups will help us to understand the patient perspective in developing a safety tool. This will include patient perceptions of current tools in use and what the content and structures of a new tool may look like.
We plan to use this tool in a separate study to see what types of incidents occur. We will analyse the information gathered to see how effective this tool is.
We hope that this tool could be used in everyday practice to help improve safety in endoscopy. This has the potential to improve the care of many patients over the coming years.
