  • Research summary

Language Support does not start and finish with the GP consultation.
Many patients will need support not only during the consultation but in
reception, at the pharmacy, with hospital letters and phone calls and with other
primary care services. The current gold standard is to use professional
interpreters who are registered with the National Register of Public Service
Interpreters (NRPSI) (NHS England 2015) in the GP consultation.
However, the current guidance is based on studies looking mainly at
linguistic accuracy often in outpatient settings and GP consultations.
There is a paucity of research exploring patient preference and extended
needs. More significantly there are very few NRPSI registered interpreters
even for common community languages (Urdu: 140 registered
    interpreters).

Research Question:- 1)Do patients have a preference as to who interprets during consultations with healthcare professionals
    2) Where else in the primary care environment do the patients needs support with language

We will recruit participants from local community groups based in the Firth Vale, Burngreave, Pitsmoor and Darnall areas of Sheffield . Individuals will be eligible to take part in the study if they are non English speakers, have limited English Language Proficiency (ELP) or if the are family members of the above two categories and have acted as adhoc interpreters for family members. Due to the demographic of the populations served by above areas it is expected the main ethnic groups served will speak Urdu, Arabic and Roma.

Face to face individual interviews will be conducted in GP surgery settings. It is envisaged that individual interviews will last approximately 30 minutes.
