Research summary
A main aim of current healthcare policies is to create a paperless health service by 2020 (National Information Board, 2014) in order to bridge gaps between services and provide more integrated care for patients (Honeyman, et al., 2016). Despite this guidance, little is known about the effects this has or may have on patients receiving care within the community. The aim of the study is to identify patients’ perspectives on mobile working and the use of tablet devices to replace paper records within community nursing. It will aim to capture their current understanding, highlight gaps in awareness and potential barriers to implementation. The study will involve face to face semi structured interviews with 8-10 participants, these will be conducted within the patient’s homes and will be audio recorded. Participants will be selected based on having at least 6 months regular contact with the community nursing service. As potential participants will be identified by other nurses, consent to contact will be obtained prior to initial contact by the researcher, to explain the study and answer questions. Written informed consent will be gained prior to conducting the interviews. Interviews will be transcribed verbatim and analysed using framework analysis for themes and patterns that arise. It is anticipated that the results may be used to aid future implementation of mobile working, and the reduction of paper held records within community nursing services through aspect such as improved communication and information leaflets.
