  • Research summary

This proposed study constitutes the third and final part of the main researcher’s larger doctoral research plan to understand person-centred practice among emergency department (ED) physiotherapists. Having already surveyed and interviewed UK ED physiotherapists during the previous stage, the researcher will now focus on collecting qualitative data from an adult patient population attending the researcher’s local ED. The aim here is to capture patient experience, views and perceptions regarding the person-centred practices of the attending physiotherapists who have managed their care to answer the research question: “What are the views of patients on their experience of emergency department physiotherapy and the extent to which it is person-centred?” The data for this study will be collected from a convenience sample of patients who, upon discharge by the respective ED physiotherapist, will be introduced to the study. This will be through the offer of an information sheet and asking for consent to be contacted by the lead investigator. Once they have had a chance to think about being involved, they will be contacted to confirm consent to take part in semi-structured interview either online or via telephone. The informal interview will likely last 30 mins and will offer the opportunity for patients to offer their views of what constitutes person-centredness and their expectations of their ED physiotherapist. Individual participants are expected to be involved for a total of around two weeks from recruitment to completion of interviews. Data will be recorded, transcribed, thematically analysed and written up in both journal manuscript and as a chapter in the main researcher’s PhD thesis. It is hoped that a model or framework can be produced to support the person-centred practices of ED physiotherapists, ultimately improving future experiences for their ED patients.
