Research summary
This research is stage 1 of the GASTROS Study. GASTROS stands for GAstric cancer Surgical Trials Reported Outcomes Standardisation. The study aims to standardise the way in which research trials examining surgical interventions for gastric cancer report their results (also known as outcomes). GASTROS is fully funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR).
Why is it important?
Ensuring that trials report their outcomes in the same way means that the effect of treatments can be compared more accurately. This is especially important for gastric cancer where the long term survival remains poor and understanding the effectiveness of potential treatments becomes even more important. How do we aim to achieve our goal?
GASTROS aims to gain consensus from doctors, nurses and patients to decide what are the most relevant outcomes that trials should report. This is called a Core Outcome Set. In addition, GASTROS will identify the most appropriate tools (know as outcome measurement instruments) to measure these outcomes. We will ensure that our work is publicised widely so it can be implemented in future trials.Details of the Patient Interviews
Gastric cancer patients will be interviewed. They will be asked about their priorities regarding treatments for gastric cancer. Themes from the interviews will be identified and this will then be used to inform stage 2 of the study. Stage 2 is the consensus process involving patients, clinicians and nurses to identify a core outcome set.REC name
