  • Research summary

A lack of patient perceptions and involvement in the discharge process from hospital was highlighted by a literature review and a prior study by the researcher. As a result of this, this study will investigate the discharge process at the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen Hospital Trust (RLBUHT) from the patient’s perspective. In particular, the study will focus on the aspect of medication supply for discharge.
This study forms part of a larger PhD study, which aims to develop a new model of care for the discharge of patients from hospital back into the community. This research is important to allow the development of a new model of care that incorporates patient feedback. As the service users, patients will bring an essential viewpoint to the study which may not be considered by healthcare providers developing health and social care services.
The study itself will take place at RLBUHT over a two week period, and will involve questionnaires with patients waiting to be discharged from a range of medical and surgical wards in the hospital. The questionnaire contains mostly closed questions, with space provided to expand on certain thoughts or answers. This will result in mainly quantitative data, which will be analysed using descriptive statistics in order to establish the majority of patient views. Any extra information provided by patients will be used to explain answers and be useful in later stages of the PhD as a rationale for developing the new model of care.
