  • Research summary

    Background
Pre-operative health optimisation involves helping patients who have been referred for elective surgery to optimise their health (particularly weight and smoking) before surgery. The aim is to make surgery safer and recovery quicker. However, for people judged to need pre-operative health optimisation, this entails an additional delay before surgery.
    Aims
This study aims to conduct and analyse interviews with patients who have been referred into a pre-operative health optimisation scheme in order to understand their motivations for engaging, or not engaging with the scheme.
    Methods
We will recruit participants from diverse socio-economic backgrounds and holding different views of the scheme, from those who fully engaged and regard it positively, to those who have negative opinions of the scheme and chose not to engage.
The study will be conducted in Barnsley CCG which has recently (April 2018) introduced a pre-hospital health optimisation scheme (“Get Fit First”). Participants will be recruited through their GP practices and interviews will be carried out within the GP surgeries.
We will carry out qualitative analysis of the interviews using an approach which emphasises the individual’s experience and perceptions.
    Outcomes
By understanding the range of patient perspectives in this one area we aim to inform a more general understanding of engagement with pre-hospital health optimisation and its impact, particularly on more socio-economically deprived populations.
    Dissemination
This research will be conducted for a student dissertation (BMedSci) to a level which leads to academic conference and journal publication. A report will be provided by Barnsley CCG and offered to participants.
