Research summary
Patients who sustain complex musculoskeletal (CMSK) injury account for over half of hospital admissions following major trauma (LHO, 2002). Yet, the evidence suggests a lack of provision in rehabilitation services and inequalities in access for this patient group. Inadequate rehabilitation results in higher complication rates (Halcomb et al, 2005) and poorer outcomes (Kosar et al, 2009; NAO, 2010), including delayed return to work and leisure activities (Bascetta, 2007). This has a profound impact on patient satisfaction and Trust performance as reported on the Trauma & Audit Research Network (TARN) database.
The study participants will be adults with CMSK injuries as defined by their injury severity score (ISS) and rehabilitation complexity scale-extended trauma version (RCS-ET). Patients who are 18 months post injury will be invited for an assessment. A variety of outcome measures will be used. Both quantitative and qualitative methods for data analysis will be utilised. The results will identify how intensity of rehabilitation affects outcome and whether this should be explored further. This information will be used to inform service provision and commissioning contracts.
