Research summary
Patient information in diagnostic imaging: assessing the impact of changes to European Directive 2013/59/Euratom.
The European Directive 2013/59/Euratom is a basic safety standard given to member states of the European Union regarding all forms of radiation. The Directive has increased the onus on referrers, operators and practitioners to ensure that patients (and carers and comforters) have adequate information about these risks and benefits to make an informed decision and avoid any unnecessary examinations as radiation exposure is linked to an increased risk of cancer.
A questionnaire will be used for patients undergoing a diagnostic examination to establish whether patients have had this discussion, information they want and how best to disseminate this. Patients will be given the information before attending and a questionnaire will be given after the scan so there is no coercion. Participation is voluntary, and they can withdraw at any time.
This study will exclude paediatrics (under 18’s), and those unable to speak/understand English.Only two studies from the systematic review mentioned Nurse Practitioners (Ditofsky (2016) and Puri et al (2012)) both of which were outside the UK. Given the increase of Advanced Practice in the UK, this is an important source about which little is known. It was decided that this would be a focus of the proposed research, along with Radiographers (very patient facing) and final year Radiography students (about to become autonomous practitioners).
Data collection for staff and students will include both questionnaires and interviews. This study will be carried out at the University Hospital of Derby and Burton trust (five sites).
