Research summary
Genetic testing is traditionally provided by genetics professionals, who explain the reasons for the tests and the possible outcomes. As genetic testing is used more often in healthcare, alternative models of delivery are being considered.
One area in which genetics is being used increasingly is in cancer prevention and treatment. Some oncology departments are now training cancer specialist nurses and doctors to talk to patients about genetic testing, and obtain consent for testing. Some papers have explored how healthcare professionals feel about this change in responsibility but so far few have explored how it feels for patients and how it may alter their experience of genetic testing. This study intends to talk to patients who have received testing through their oncology clinic, and better understand how this model may affect patients.REC name
