Research summary
Many hospitals in England have set up an emergency ambulatory care service. This involves treating or investigating patients who have presented as emergencies, but are not in any danger, as outpatients. It is generally thought that this provides better experience for patients, because they can continue their normal home life. However, a pilot study we have done shows that there are aspects of this service that some patients do not like, such as travelling, and there are needs that aren’t always met, such as reassurance regarding safety of not being in hospital, clear details about who to contact and what to do if things worsen. We aim to use an established method to generate a survey based on patient’s views. This will be used to provide continuous feedback to clinical teams to help them provide a service that gives good patient experience.
