  • Research summary

This research study aims to investigate first hand experiences of young people who received nasogastric tube feeding during their stay on a Tier 4 Specialist Eating Disorder Unit.
The specific focus of this study will be on their experience of nasogastric tube feeding whilst at a normal body weight.
There is currently very little research into this area. It is known that this practice has increased in recent years particularly since Covid and there is variation across eating disorder units. We need to better understand why YP stay on the tube feed for so long -for example is it dependency or lack of guidance to help them off the tube.

This study will be retrospective. Potential participants aged between 13-18years who have been discharged will be invited to complete a semi - structured interview sharing insights into their experiences of nasogastric feeding whilst at a normal weight. The methodology is straightforward and risks low.

Expected benefits include increasing understanding form the patient’s perspective of this niche area. There is potential to influence future practices which minimise negative impacts and improve outcomes for this complex group of young people.

Actual benefits will be used to guide further research.
This research is a student MSc dissertation project for MSc Eating Disorders and Clinical Nutrition.
The student toolkit has been used to determine that it is research and it does need a REC review. Certificates are uploaded.
