Research summary
Influences upon Patient Experience of Moving and Handling in Hospitals
Summary:
Assessment and application of moving and handling procedures has been challenged and criticised in the Community and Care Homes. In some instances, implementation of manual handling policies has been judged inflexible or unlawful, impacting upon human rights and quality of life. There is a lack of research on how this applies in hospital settings and to patients’ rights. Gaps in the literature mean that there is little understanding of the patient’s perspective on moving and handling in hospitals.A qualitative study is proposed to investigate patient experience of moving and handling. This will be based upon patient interview that will subsequently be analysed and synthesised using Grounded Theory. The analysis will be used to construct a model of the factors influencing patient experience of moving and handling encounters. The patients will be selected from a group identified as needing assistance to move in two rehabilitation hospitals. These patients will also have had recent exposure to care in the Acute Hospital and therefore a wide knowledge of the patient journey. It is anticipated that 9 – 15 patients will be interviewed, dependent upon when saturation of data is reached.
