Research summary
This research aims to improve understanding of the patient's experience of medication reduction in chronic pain patients. There are a number of patients on high levels of prescription medication, particularly opioid drugs. Recent evidence has shown the potentially damaging effects of these drugs, in the context of limited long term efficacy. Therefore, many patients are being encouraged to reduce their medication. This study will involve a qualitative analysis of 8 interviews with people with chronic pain who have successfully reduced their pain medication. Participants will be identified by their clinician and invited to take part. They will be interviewed at one of the pain self-management clinic sites. They will complete a short questionnaire asking for demographic information and also information about their pain presentation. They will then be interviewed about their experience of medication reduction, including what factors motivated them to reduce, and what made it difficult. This will provide insight to the patient's experience of reducing medication. This has not been investigated by previous studies.
