Research summary
Obstructive sleep apnoea is a common condition, characterised by interrupted breathing during sleep, producing awakenings and daytime symptoms, reducing quality of life and associated with reduced life expectancy. In the UK most patients are diagnosed using home tests. These usually involve measurement devices attached to the subject that can disturb sleep and become dislodged in the night. The purpose of this study is to measure the impact of home sleep studies on the patients’ impression of their sleep quality and to quantify how often home studies fail to give a useful answer due to technical issues. This will inform the design of new tests which may give more reliable results, avoid repeat studies and reduce the diagnostic waiting times for patients with suspected sleep apnoea.
