Research summary
In 2001, the Department of Health set out care pathways that people with Type 2 diabetes should receive each year to prevent and detect the early signs of complications. Newly diagnosed patients should also complete an education program (e.g. DESMOND, X-PERT) to learn how to manage their condition effectively. In 2017, the NHS asked companies for ideas on improving outcomes for patients through behaviour change. The company Ayogo submitted a proposal to the Wessex AHSN and Hampshire & Isle of Wight STP and were selected to establish a partnership. For this study, we will learn if the Ayogo app can help patients increase their engagement and confidence in managing their diabetes. The app will be offered to 100 newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes patients by diabetes nurses in 7 GP surgeries in Hampshire. The study will look to see if patients are attending their appointments more quickly and regularly when they use the Ayogo app. We will also ask patients, in a survey, how they feel about living with diabetes and if they think that the Ayogo app helped them.
