Research summary
Our aim is to assess patient related outcome measures in complex abdominal wall reconstruction. In most cases this is a life-style altering as opposed to a life saving operation. Quantitative measures, such as hernia recurrence rate or wound infection rate, are important in the evaluation of surgical success. Increasingly patient related outcomes measures, such as satisfaction and improvement in quality of life, are being used to define surgical success. These measures are key in our understanding of outcome in life-style altering surgery. What is an important outcome for the surgeon, for example low long-term recurrence, might completely differ from that of the patient, who may not mind a small recurrence as long as they are no longer in pain. These outcomes have thus far been poorly studied in ventral hernia surgery. \n\nPatients due to undergo complex abdominal wall reconstruction will be identified for inclusion in the study. The study will take place over 6 months which includes the patients operative intervention. Patients will be asked to participate in two interviews (one pre-operatively and one post-operatively) and complete questionnaires at three time points (pre-operatively, 4 weeks and 6 months post-operatively).
