Research summary
The qualitative research study on community phototherapy is a descriptive study to assess patient, carer and staff experience in a new service in West BCUHB-community phototherapy. The West BCUHB will be launching a new community phototherapy service to improve access to phototherapy. Phototherapy is an effective and long-established treatment for a variety of common inflammatory skin conditions, including psoriasis and eczema . A course of phototherapy requires 3 times weekly visits to the phototherapy units with each visit lasting 10-15 minutes. In the UK, phototherapy is almost exclusively hospital-based. This creates access issues for patients who lack transport, lack mobility, lack time due to work and commitments to childcare or other carer responsibilities.Poor access to phototherapy leads to suboptimal skin treatment and ultimately leads to earlier commencement of the next hierarchical elements, systemic and biologic therapies. This problem is particularly common in West BCUHB mainly due to the small number of phototherapy units - only two phototherapy units (Ysbyty Gwynedd and Ysbyty Llandudno) serving a large geographical area. Phototherapy in West BCUHB will include nurse-led phototherapy hubs to reach a larger geographical area, out of hours service and a home phototherapy service.
The study will aim to assess patient ,carer and staff experience in community phototherapy. The study stages are summarised below:
Stage 1:Patient recruitment
Patients, carer and staff will be given verbal and written information on the study.Patients and staff are given as much time needed to ask questions. If patients agree to phototherapy,a written consent will be taken.Stage 2:Interview(data collection)
Semi structured in depth interviews will be conducted. Each interview will last approxiametly 1 hour.Interviews will be conducted at participants choice of venue(usually their home).Particpants may be interviewed more than twice.Stage 3:Data transcription and analysis
All data will be recorded and and given non-identifiable ID.Interview will be transcribed verbatim and analysed.REC name
