  • Research summary

Computed Tomography Colonography (CTC) is a diagnostic examination that takes place within the radiology department, this is performed to investigate the colon of patients that have symptoms to suggest that they may have some colonic pathology. This examination is invasive as a catheter has to be inserted into the patients' bottom in order for the examination to be performed. 24 hours prior to the examination the patient must also fast from food and drink a liquid bowel preparation in order to prepare the colon for the examination.

Two groups of patients will be included in this study:

60 patients are required for this pilot study. Thirty in group one which is the patients who will have a CTC and thirty in group two where the patients will have a CT of the abdomen and pelvis.

These two groups of patients will be directly compared against each other regarding the amount of anxiety that they go through in the lead up to their appointment for their CT scan. This will be done using both questionnaires and five patients in each group will have a one to one interview, these five patients will be determined at random by a computer programme.
