  • Research summary

This study aims to explore patient and staff experiences of Positive Behavioural Support (PBS) in a secure hospital for mental disorder. PBS is a model of behavioural support to understand what maintains an individual’s challenging behaviour and help to reduce it.\nResearch about PBS has mostly incorporated male patients in medium secure settings. For example, Davies et al. (2018) has included some females in one of his studies, but this was a quantitative study with limited generalisability regarding patient type and location. Other recent research on PBS has included staff in a setting where patient group variables are not detailed (Davies et al. 2016) and how staff training affects the attitudes and implementation of PBS (Davies et al. 2018). Therefore, there is a need to expand the evidence base for PBS in order to provide future direction for research and any potential clinical implications. \nThis study will use Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) which is a qualitative method. In this study, IPA will be used to explore staff and patient experiences of PBS in low to medium secure wards in a forensic hospital which specialises in mental disorder where patients are sectioned under The Mental Health Act (1983). A semi-structured interview will be used to allow for flexibility with the participant’s presentation and to tailor questions for staff and patients. \n
