Research summary
Due to government, NHS and charity early dementia diagnosis campaigns, referrals to Memory Assessment Services (MAS) have been increasing. As service demand grows, further research is warranted to inform dementia care pathways. There are four standard time points along dementia care pathways: 1) First service encounters, 2) Assessment process, 3) Diagnostic disclosure, and 4) Post diagnostic support (Samsi & Manthorpe, 2014). Current literature regarding cognitive assessments is limited compared to other pathway points and UK-based research is scarce. In this study, carer and patient experiences of cognitive assessments within NHS Memory assessment services will be examined using Multi-Perspective IPA methodology. This study will recruit and interview 6-8 patients and 6-8 carers to explore and compare the lived experiences of both patients and carers. It is intended to use the results of this study to provide recommendations to inform future care and clinical practice for NHS memory assessment services within the North-East of England. To the author’s knowledge, this study will be the first to investigate both carer and patient experiences of cognitive assessments within the North-East of England.
