  • Research summary

We are planning to study patients undergoing Total Hip Replacement (THR) at the Manchester Orthopaedic Centre (MOC) based at Trafford General Hospital with patients from Manchester Royal and Trafford Hospitals. Movement restrictions are recommended following total hip replacement to reduce the incidence of dislocation. However, emerging evidence casts doubt on the impact of post-operative restrictions on incidence of joint dislocation. In addition to the uncertainty of the impact on dislocation of the post-operative restrictions is uncertainty around the level of adherence to the restrictions by patients.

The proposed research therefore plans to explore adherence levels of patients at six and twelve weeks following hip replacement surgery. This will be done using an anonymous postal questionnaire.
