  • Research summary

This research study will focus on the opinions and preferences of patients regarding sedation as a side effect of analgesia (pain relieving medication). The study aims to assess the extent to which palliative care patients would be willing to accept sedation as a side effect of such medication to inform palliative physicians of what their patients do and do not want from the care they receive. The study will entail development of a questionnaire and subsequent semi-structured interviews with patients who will answer questions based on a hypothetical scenario of illness. Participants will score their acceptability of sedation in various hypothetical circumstances.

The research team has experience of working with palliative care patients in a sensitive environment.
