Research summary
There are many ways of measuring the blood flow into the legs. As part of the standard blood flow assessment a blood pressure reading is required to be taken from the ankle or toe. However, certain conditions can make these blood pressure readings unreliable or not possible to be taken. Particularly in patients with diabetes, leg ulcers or previous amputations. We are investigating if information taken from arterial waveforms (patterns from the pulse seen on the ultrasound scanner) can be used as alternatives for blood pressure readings when a typical blood pressure method would be unreliable or in some cases not able to be taken.
Currently we do not know if patients with different types and severity of arterial disease will have different arterial waveform patterns when compared to blood pressure readings taken from the ankle and toe. We are hoping to identify a link between the arterial waveform and blood pressure in the foot for patients with PAD. This will allow us to predict the blood pressure in the feet of patients who cannot have pressure measurements taken in the standard way and therefore allow treatment to be planned more effectively.REC name
