  • Research summary

Gestational Diabetes (GDM) leads to complications in pregnancy and future development of Type 2 Diabetes. Increasing obesity means incidence of GDM is rising. We will look at whether a nutrition and exercise programme for women with GDM and their male partners in the postnatal period following the birth of their first baby improves ‘family’ health and lifestyle. Including partners may help sustain lifestyle change in preparation for further pregnancy. For this small feasibility study male partners only are included but this would be reviewed for a larger study.

Twenty-five women and their partners will be recruited from the Royal Surrey County Hospital Maternity Unit GDM clinic before they give birth and will be asked to consent to contact at five weeks after birth. Of these, twelve couples who have agreed to participate and fulfil the eligibility criteria will be invited for an assessment at Surrey Sports Park where they will be randomised to an intervention or a control group.

The intervention group will have an initial assessment followed by a 12-week nutrition and exercise programme with assessment after 6 and 12 weeks. Women will be invited to attend a group exercise programme with their babies and men will be offered a one-hour personalised training session per week. The couple will be invited together to a one-hour healthy nutrition group on a Saturday morning.

The control group will be offered an initial assessment and follow up assessment after 6 and 12 weeks.

We will interview all couples and staff at the end of the 12 weeks to ask them about their experiences in the study.

The findings will lead to the the design of a larger intervention study for couples and the effect of reducing weight between pregnancies in preventing GDM in the next pregnancy.
