Research summary
The primary aim of this study is to describe, investigate, contextualise and increase the understanding of people living well with dementia for the cultural sector. People living with dementia will be placed at the heart of the research process using a participatory action research model. Both the person with dementia and their carer will be included hence the term ‘people living with dementia’.
The research group will select activities based on an arts and cultural programme offered organisations such as The Alzheimer’s Society, Merseyside Dance Initiative, Fact, Tate Liverpool, The Royal Court and Merseycare.
The project will last for six months with three activities each month. These include:1. An art activity (dementia friendly cinema, a dance and movement class for people living with dementia, viewing of an art gallery exhibition, attending a theatre performance and a music event.)
2. A focus group to discuss experiences, like and dislikes. (This will more than likely take place after the art activity and lunch/dinner will be provided)
3. An evaluation discussion to establish key areas and themes. All activities should not take a large amount of time (up to 2 hours max.) They will be free and refreshments will be provided. During the arts activity the co-researchers will be observing their own experience of arts activities using a toolkit to help record their experience. The toolkit will consist of a small digital camera, easy to use digital recorder, notebook and pen. (After an introduction to the equipment, they will be invited to use whatever they feel most comfortable with).
The research aims to provide co-researchers with the opportunity to influence social change. Our research output will take the form of an exhibition and a comedy performance. The research data will be developed into comedy sketches to be performed as part of an exhibition.
