  • Research summary

The Family Support Service (FSS) is a pilot project (therapeutic intervention) being offered to the families of young people referred to Derbyshire Healthcare Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS). Presenting problems addressed by the FSS include: conduct issues, self-harm, obesity and anxiety disorders, each of which can cause significant distress, impact social, personal and academic development and lead to involvement with mental health and social services. As a new Service within CAMHS, it is imperative to assess the effectiveness of the project from the participant’s perspective so that we can understand whether it works and is helpful to them as a family, to identify any problems in its implementation and to provide evidence for continuing support of the programme. All families who have engaged in the FSS project will be invited to take part in this qualitative research by way of a letter sent to their home address. Three families (defined as a minimum of one adult and one child) will be invited to an interview at a CAMHS base of their choosing. The interview will last approximately one hour. Participant responses, garnered within a semi-structured interview will be analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). This method of analysis has been chosen so that the actual and lived experience of the participant can be captured in their own words. Following the analyses, all participants will be offered opportunity to meet with the researcher so they can offer feedback on results. Consent will be sought from each participant for each stage of the research and each will be offered a copy of the final report. Results will also be disseminated to colleagues and management within the Trust via meetings and steering groups. In addition, a relevant professional journal will be approached to publish the completed research document.
