Research summary
There is evidence that silver diamine fluoride (SDF) can be used to arrest dental carious lesions. During this process, it causes black discoloration of the carious lesions. SDF has recently become available for use in the UK, presenting an opportunity to explore its acceptability for managing dental carious lesions in primary teeth from both the children’s and parents’/carers’ perspective. There is an increasing emphasis on capturing the views of children within health services research to ensure that the treatments they are offered and their views on treatment outcomes are heard and addressed. Therefore, this study will investigate their views on SDF by exploring the acceptability as well as the potential barriers and enablers to the use of SDF as a treatment approach for the children and their parents/carers. The results will contribute towards the implementation of this intervention into dental practice.
