Research summary
The aim of this study is to explore parental views on the treatment options available for treating decayed permanent molar teeth. We would be exploring the opinions of the parents of children who require the removal of decayed teeth under general anaesthetic as this is currently the best treatment option for children with decayed permanent molars if done at the right developmental stage. By removing these teeth between ages 8-10 years, it is hoped that natural space closure is achieved by allowing the developing tooth behind the first molar to move forward. We aim to explore the acceptability of the concept of minimally invasive dentistry whereby children could have these teeth filled in a technique which does not involve use of injections or drilling. This research would help us to understand the most important factors of the treatment experience and outcomes both immediately and in the long-term according to parents. This will help us review currently accepted trends for extracting teeth under general anaesthetic, which has it's own risks associated with it.
This study will use interviews to explore the views of parents of children who have been referred to Kings College Hospital for treatment of decayed permanent molar teeth. The information gained from these interviews will inform a larger trial that will aim to explore the suitability of using these new techniques to restore teeth in children.
