Research summary
Five per cent of children present to their general practitioner every year with chest infections and the majority of these patients are completely managed within primary care. Current data suggests that around 60% of children are prescribed antibiotics, even though antibiotic use in children is of uncertain value as these infections can get better by themselves.
The study aims to explore parents' perspectives on antibiotic use in children with lower respiratory tract infections in primary care. To do this, the researcher will carry out interviews of 15-30 parents of children who have had a chest infection in the last year. The results will provide a better understanding of parents’ perspectives and concerns about using antibiotics in children, and will provide information for the design of a larger trial.
