  • Research summary

Are parents aware about the importance of oral health care, including examination for detection of gum disease?
The two major diseases that affect the mouth are dental decay and gum disease. The causes of gum disease are complex, but there is broad agreement that bacteria in the mouth are the primary cause of gum disease. The mildest form of gum disease is called "Gingivitis" and is characterised by redness, swelling, or bleeding from the gums. This form of gum disease can be reversed by simple and effective oral hygiene. However, there is a more severe form of gum disease called "periodontitis" that can lead to the loss of bone around teeth and eventually loss of teeth. It is very important that parents are aware about the importance of maintaining their child's oral health, and the importance of routine periodontal screening of their child.
This study aims to investigate the awareness of child patients' parents about gum disease, the importance of periodontal screening and their child's previous experience with periodontal screening. All participants will be asked to complete a questionnaire related to the questions of the study.
