Research summary
Type 1 Diabetes is a common chronic illness that requires close management of insulin levels in the blood. As children with diabetes become teenagers, healthcare services help them to become more independent in managing their illness. At this stage, parents take a step back but still have overall responsibility for the wellbeing of their teenager.
The aim of the study is to explore the views of parents of teenagers with Type 1 Diabetes. The study will ask parents about the support they received from healthcare services as their child became a teenager and took charge of their illness management. It will ask what has been helpful and what they have found difficult while having a teenager with diabetes.
Participants will be parents/carers of teenagers aged 13-17, with Type 1 Diabetes in NHS Highland. The study will aim to recruit between four and ten participants. Participants will be people who respond to either, flyers given out to parents at clinics by the diabetes healthcare team, or posters that will be placed in diabetes clinic waiting rooms at Raigmore Hospital.
Written consent will be taken before interviews take place. Participants will be given time to read a participant information sheet and ask any questions they have before they sign the consent form.
The study will have a qualitative design, meaning that it will look at the experiences and opinions of participants. Semi-structured interviews will be transcribed and analysed to find themes relating to participants experiences.
Findings from the study will inform how healthcare services support parents/carers of teenagers with Type 1 Diabetes.
