Research summary
This study is exploring the experiences of parents’ and carers’ who attend the Incredible Years baby parenting programme between February and December 2015 in Manchester. The Incredible Years baby parenting programme was founded by an American Clinical Psychologist, and is designed to help parents who are struggling with their newborn baby to learn how to help their babies feel loved, safe, and secure. The purpose of the study is to find out what was helpful and unhelpful about the programme, particularly as it is the first time the groups are being run across Manchester. Parents’ or carers’ will be recruited by the Children and Parent Service, part of Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services. Parents’ or carers’ will have been identified by professionals in contact with them due to struggling to bond with their baby or implement routines. The study aims to recruit 6-10 participants and will involve conducting interviews lasting approximately 1 hour. Participants will be interviewed after they have completed the programme; they will be asked about their experience of the group generally, what aspects were positive and any challenges that they faced. Interviews will take place either in local sure start centres across Manchester or at participants’ homes. The results from the study will inform the professionals about how to run the groups to best fit the needs of parents’ and carers’ of babies in the local area.
