Research summary
Children and young people with autism can experience high levels of anxiety; cognitively based anxiety management programmes have been shown to be effective in supporting these children. Parents are considered to be the most important support and caregiver in the life of a child with autism. The proposed research project will determine the efficacy of training parents to deliver anxiety management strategies to their own children. Parents of 20 children with a formal diagnosis of autism (10 NI and 10 ROI) will be invited to participate in a series of five workshops that will deliver training in anxiety management strategies. The efficacy of parental training in anxiety management will be assessed by pre and post workshop measures to assess levels of anxiety in the child. Follow up interviews will also be held with the parents in order to determine any additional effects of parental training.
