  • Research summary

Links have been made between early relationship patterns between children and their caregivers and ability to regulate emotion into adulthood. Similarly, links have been made between ability to regulate emotion and the development of an eating disorder. Difficult early relationships have also been consistently found to predict development of eating disorders.

This research will investigate whether dimensions of emotion regulation mediate the link between early relationships and eating disorder symptomology. It will use quantitative methodology and mediator analysis of questionnaires completed by adults with an eating disorder recruited through an eating disorder charity website as well as an NHS eating disorder service in Birmingham. The questionnaires will assess three constructs:

    1. Early parental/ care-giver rearing styles (using the Egna Minnen Beträffande Uppfostran ("My Memories of Upbringing"; EMBU; Arrindell et al, 1999))
    2. Difficulties with emotion regulation (as measured by the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation scale (DERS; Gratz and Roemer, 2004))
    3. Symptoms of eating disorders (as measured by the EDE-Q; Fairburn and Beglin, 1994).

A non-clinical sample of adult students will be asked to complete the same measures for comparison to the clinical sample.
