Research summary
Congenital heart disease is one or more problems with the heart's structure which has been present since birth. Congenital heart disease can impact children's brains, leading to difficulties in their development for example sitting, walking, running, and jumping. Research has shown physiotherapy can improve children with congenital heart disease development, although this literature is limited, and further research is needed. Little is known about how parents of children with congenital heart disease feel about their child’s development or how best they feel physiotherapy could be used to support them. In this study, we will conduct one-to-one interviews, virtually via Zoom, with parents whose children have congenital heart disease and are aged between 0-18 years and have undergone cardiac surgery within the NHS. Understanding parental perspectives of their child’s development and how best they feel it should be supported, will improve future research designs and clinical trials evaluating the impact of physiotherapeutic interventions and services in children with congenital heart disease.
