Research summary
The transition period is when young people are getting ready to move from child to adult healthcare services. During this time, adolescents can face challenges in many areas of their lives. For those with chronic medical conditions the transition period can be even more challenging as they have to begin to take greater responsibility for their own healthcare and medical needs. The transition period can also be a very difficult time for parents who may have new concerns and face significant changes to care-giving roles that they may have held for a long time.
While there is increasing evidence about how to support adolescents during this process, there is little comparative evidence about the needs of parents. This study will address this knowledge gap by interviewing groups of parents who have children with chronic conditions to learn about their experiences of transition and their support needs. It is hoped that this information will enable the researchers to make recommendations that can be used by healthcare professionals to provide transitional care services that improve outcomes for parents and their children.
