Research summary
The Co-investigator (researcher), Imelda Mayor, works as a clinical research nurse on a Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU) in the North West of England. The population of premature or ill neonates available for enrolment onto research studies is relatively small, approximately 1200 babies are admitted to this NICU annually, however strict eligibility criteria excludes many babies from enrolment. With an expanding research portfolio the NICU research team may approach parents more than once to discuss the eligibility of their baby for multiple studies. The NICU research team are mindful that parents experience multiple stressors when their baby is cared for on a NICU, and wanted to explore how parents experienced being approached to enrol their baby onto research studies, potentially multiple times during their stay. This study will examine what factors influence parents decision to agree or refuse to enrol their baby onto a study and what support they would value when considering enrolling their baby onto research and throughput the research process. The results of the study will inform the practice of the NICU research team to better support parents.
Eligible participants are parents of babies who on the NICU of St Mary’s Hospital, Manchester, who have been approached at least once to discuss a research study that their baby is eligible for. If parents agree to participate they will be invited to an interview at a time and location that suits them (either in a quiet room on the NICU, at the participants’ home or over the telephone). Semi structured, one to one interviews will be conducted between the researcher and the parent. Parents will be interviewed once, each interview is estimated to take between 30 and 60 minutes depending on participant responses. Interviews will be recorded and transcribed and analysed by the researcher.REC name
