Research summary
This study will examine the views and experiences of parents whose child is diagnosed with Sensorineural Hearing Loss (SNHL) caused by Cytomegalovirus (CMV). CMV is a common infection in newborns worldwide and causes hearing loss and other neurological disability in 15– 20% of infected infants (Goderis et al,. 2014). Research has not yet illustrated the impact of this infection. This study isolates an area of missing research where little insight has been gained. It is possible that for parents of children with CMV, the experience of the journey from referral to diagnosis of SNHL may be different to those of other parents. This could be for two main reasons: first the diagnosis of CMV can lead to a wide range of hearing outcomes. Secondly more checks and assessments are required, and their child's hearing is more likely to deteriorate. An understanding of parents’ perspective is particularly relevant to everyone involved in early support and management of infants with SNHL caused by CMV.
