Research summary
The research aim is to give parents with children who has been treated with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation before the age of eighteen months old a chance to discuss their experiences. It will be conducted by the chief investigator as part of a masters degree, under the supervision of the sponsor, a senior lecturer at Kings College London. The study will take place in the trust where the chief investigator is employed as a senior nurse, who has likely cared for some, if not all, of the ECMO patients who's parents have been deemed eligible to participate. Participants will be selected using data collected during patients in hospital stay by the chief investigator as part of the neurology multidisciplinary team, where the chief investigator is the lead link nurse. The participant data is recorded and stored securely on encrypted protected trust drives. It is kept while the patient remains a patient of the trust, to allow for patient follow up and to make sure the patient is appropriate followed up post discharge and during, if necessary, future re-admission. It will consist of a one off interviews with parents where they are asked a simple question, "Please describe your experience of having a child on ECMO" with small prompting questions ie "you talked about... could you tell me more about that please" if necessary. It is estimated the interview will take between one to two hours. The interviews will be transcribed and analysed using computer software NVIVO. The data will then be peer reviewed by an independant collegue of the sponsors at King College London. The study will be written up and submitted as a masters dissertation. A copy will be offered to all study participants.
