Research summary
Dysphagia is a skill-based disorder involving and of the three stages of swallowing. Parental experience of dysphagia in neurotypical children will be explored during a focus group. The focus group and interviews will explore themes including diagnosis, management, level of practice, referral patterns, assessment methods, access to specialist services and thoughts on quality of current pathways of care. The focus group topic points were co-designed with a parent representative. Four parents of neurotypical children with dysphagia were invited to test the questionnaire design and content. The parents recruited were invited by the PhD student via phone conversation to participate in the validation discussion. All four parents verbally consented to the participation in the validation process. Three attended to contribute to the final version of the survey (Appendix A) a via virtual meeting. The meeting was led by the parent representative and recorded with consent from all participants.
Parents will be invited to join a focus group to obtain a deeper insight into the parental experience. The aim will be to conduct three focus groups with five to six participants in each group to thoroughly investigate the experiences raised. Participants will attend the focus groups in person. If physical attendance is not possible, participants will join the group via video platform. The interviews will be video recorded and transcribed verbatim by the researcher. The data will be analysed for themes. The PhD student and team will review repeated themes with no new ideas being identified at which point data saturation will be judged to have been achieved and interviews ended earlier. Throughout the qualitative research, the PhD student will keep a diary of any subjective observations to add to the data collection and analysis.REC name
