  • Research summary

The aim of the present study is to examine parental views of injustice in the context of having a child with a long-term pain condition e.g. musculoskeletal pain. Injustice can involve directing feelings of loss, blame and unfairness about pain towards others. Research has established that perceived injustice has an adverse effect on those who experience pain, but little is known about how injustice is perceived amongst those who care for those with pain, such as parents whose views e.g. about what is unfair for them or their child might affect the parent-child relationship and how both parties adjust to the child’s pain. In addressing this gap, the study findings will be used to inform future research and intervention to support parents and children with pain. Research will be conducted at three sites as part of an International Association for the Study of Pain funded collaboration between universities in Glasgow, Belgium and Alabama. Approval is sought for the Glasgow-based phase of research. To confirm the clinical diagnosis of the child’s pain, parents will be recruited from the Royal Hospital for Children, Glasgow. Study invitation letters and follow-up letters will be posted to 60 randomly selected families inviting one healthy parent of a child aged 8-16 years with a chronic pain condition to participate in the study. This number is based on up to eight parents attending one of up to four focus group discussions at Glasgow Caledonian University and will allow for a lack of interest and non-responders. Parents will complete postal questionnaires before participating in their group discussion. Each focus group session is expected to last for up to two hours and will take place between September and December 2016. Travel expenses and other costs will be reimbursed up to the value of £25.
