Research summary
Parental Anxiety and Post-Traumatic Stress Symptoms in Paediatric Food Allergy: An Online Survey
This study is aiming to better understand the impact that caring for a child with food allergy has for their parents. Past research has shown parents to have increased levels of stress and anxiety. Some parents have also described seeing their child have an allergic reaction as traumatic but this has not previously been assessed. This study will assess how many parents report significant levels of anxiety, worry, and trauma symptoms. The study will then explore factors that might help predict which parents are at increased risk of experiencing anxiety or trauma. It is hoped that the results of the study can help with the development of better ways to understand and support parents of children with food allergies.
Participants will be parents of children with food allergies. The child must be aged 0-16 years, and have a food allergy diagnosed by a GP or allergy clinic. Parents will be at least 18 years old, live in the UK, and have a good understanding of English. Parents will be recruited through an allergy clinic in Norwich and online advertisements through allergy charities and social media. The study will involve parents completing online surveys about their wellbeing, their child’s allergy, and their confidence in allergy management. The survey is expected to take around 20-25 minutes to complete. To thank them for their time, participants will have the option to enter a prize draw to win one of ten £20 Amazon gift vouchers.
