  • Research summary

Facial injuries are relatively common among children with those caused by falls and dog bites being particularly frequent. Although the majority of such injuries are minor, they are highly visible and even good outcomes can be associated with scarring. Consent and compliance are complicating factors that mean the views, values, fears and expectations of parents must be taken into account when planning treatment. This study will evaluate the stressors and concerns that may play a part in modulating the anxiety experienced by parents following facial injury in a child. This will be achieved in the following ways:

    1. We will use a validated questionnaire to enquire about parental anxiety and stressors at the time of the injury and three months later.
    2. We will ask parents about their expectations of how their child’s injury would be managed.
    3. We will record information regarding the injury and its clinical management.
    4. We will record information on parent’s satisfaction with the treatment received.

We hope that this study will allow us to understand the psycho-social factors which may affect the feelings of parents whose child has suffered a facial injury. Additionally we hope that this study will help us better understand the expectations of parents who bring their children to hospital following a facial injury. It is expected that a greater understanding of factors that are not directly related to the type or severity of injury will help us improve communication with parents
